Breakfast: The meal that really gets your engine going.

Some reasons that breakfast is the most important meal of the day:

  • It kick-starts your metabolism. Some people skip breakfast as an approach to cut calories and lose weight.  However, this is not a good idea.  When you sleep, your metabolic rate (the amount of calories your burn) plummets.  When you skip breakfast, your metabolism remains in “sleep mode” and therefore is ineffective at burning calories.  If you are concerned with weight loss, eating a healthy breakfast will aid in increasing you fat burning ability.
  • It keeps you from overeating at lunch. Skipping breakfast can lead you to overeat at your next meal or snack.  Eating reasonable portions three times a day will regulate your cravings and keep you from eating too much in one sitting.
  • It improves your thinking ability and your memory. Eating breakfast keeps you focused and able to think.  Breakfast is fuel for the brain and studies have shown that is also boosts memory (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition November 2001; 75: 567-568).
  • It keeps you from feeling tired. There is a reason we eat food.  We need food for energy in order to live and accomplish daily tasks.  No matter what we do, we need to eat!  Start your day off right with a burst of breakfast energy.
  • It tastes good. Think of some of your favorite healthy foods.  Starting off your day with eating something you love will not only give you energy but make you feel positive.

On the creative end of things, try out the DEE-LICIOUS breakfast combinations that I found on the Quaker Oats website.  These ideas make (once boring, yet nutritious) oatmeal into a masterpiece that your taste-buds with really appreciate!
